The history of BW Herbert Ltd started when Beswick, (grandfather of current owner Blake) Aussie to his mates, along with his son Bryan (Blakes father), started BW Herbert Ltd in a shed on what is now Victoria Park in Auckland in 1947. It has remained a family business ever since.
The North Shore branch was opened in 1960 on East Coast Road at Pinehill and Blake and his wife Julie purchased the Shore branch and reopened it in Bute Road, Browns Bay in January 1995. It was relocated to Hillside Road in January 2007.
Aussie was a hardware man through and through having worked after his war service (he served at Gallipoli, a true blue kiwi serving with the Australian Imperial Force) at John Duthie and Coy in Customs Street, finishing as manager when he left to set up BW Herbert Ltd.
Bryan was an accountant working for the Public Trust when he went into business with his father, HC Kitchen and his son Lloyd.. Bryan served on the executives of all the trade associations and guilds often as president. He was instrumental in setting up the Manukau Tech course which trained so many top tradespeople and issued them with the keenly sought after trade certificates. He was a well respected gentleman of his time. His philosophy “that BW Herbert will always be a company where service is paramount and the personal aspect is given the most importance over riding everything else” still stands today.
Blake joined the old company from school. He now has over thirty years in the business with thorough product knowledge. He can provide you with the best service available. You can see he has plumbing and hardware coursing thru his veins!!!
And so the family tradition continues with the eldest son having trained in the business and now living in Australia. The middle son is here on Saturdays and the youngest son just starting out!!!
